In an episode in the first season of the serial legal thriller Damages, Glenn Close’s character Patty Hewes makes a significant although not entirely accurate observation — “Never take power away from a man… someone always gets hurt.” But despite the statement, the two women at the centre of the show’s action, Patty Hewes, and eventually her protege Ellen, are just as shrewd and as power-hungry as the men around them.
